Women Following their Dreams - Shannon Cheung from Typoflora

Women Following their Dreams - Shannon Cheung from Typoflora
In creating "A Box Of", not only do I want it to be the "go-to" place for beautiful, unique & thoughtful gifts of kindness but also a place that supports & promotes women who are making their dreams their reality. This month I've been chatting with Shannon Cheung the creator of Typoflora, a stunningly beautiful stationery design business. We sent out some of the gorgeous Typoflora products in this quarters Stationery Subscription bundle and I may just of had to keep some for myself, it's so lovely!  Now, over to Shannon who is letting us in on a bit of her how and why Typoflora came into being and a little of what makes her tick...
Women Following their Dreams interview with Typoflora

How did you get into design?
I grew up in Hong Kong, surrounded by a lot of Japanese animation culture and have always loved all things cute ever since I was little. I studied visual art and textile design at high school, for which I spent lots of time painting and drawing for school projects. I was even given the opportunity to paint patterns on the door of my classroom. For me it just seemed a natural progression to study design at uni. After graduating from university, I joined a textile design studio working with prints everyday for ten years.

When did you decide to establish your own brand?
The story of Typoflora starts with a bride-to-be, me and my wedding three years ago. Inspired by beautiful flowers, I envisioned a stunning spring garden wedding theme. Drawing on my background in textile print design, I created my own wedding stationery with hand illustrated florals, and in the process I found my calling in stationery design. It was here that Typoflora was born, offering bespoke wedding stationery and branding design service.

In 2016, Typoflora began to offer a retail line of original sophisticated floral inspired stationery. Typoflora is my passion for beautiful things sharing love for flowers and illustrations with all flower lovers.

Where does your inspiration for your beautiful designs come from?
My designs are inspired by my everyday life by observing flowers and plants around me.
I go to flower markets regularly to discover new flowers and be inspired.
I also enjoy getting inspiration during my travel. Inspired by my travel to Garden by the Bay at Singapore last year, the latest collection explores the mysterious world of delicate ferns, colourful bromeliads and hidden floral gems.

In establishing your own business what were some of the challenges you faced and how did you deal with them?
My business is pretty much run by me. The biggest challenge is of course time management- how to achieve everything on my to-do list in the timely matter. It is also important to find balance between daily tasks like emailing, packing orders, admin and the creative side of the business, to find time to draw and brainstorm new ideas.

What advice would you give someone starting their own business
You’ll never know if you never try.

What's next for you?
Over the next few months, I am very excited to launch the new Christmas collection, as well as the 2019 Always Flowers Planner. It is my first ever Typoflora planner, featuring 185 pages of illustrated flowers and plants. Can't wait to show you all!
The illustration workshops will also be back this spring. It’s very exciting to meet everyone in person again.

I love food- Mexican, Spanish, Japanese.

As a Sydney local what's your favourite place?
My favourite place in Sydney is definitely the Grounds of Alexandria. I actually had my wedding there. It’s just such a magical iconic garden, cafe, florist, market and farm, surrounded by all the greenery and hidden floral. It is such a unique experience every time you go there, always so many things to see, discover and explore there. So many decor details and thought goes into every corner of the place.

Oh that’s great work. I never progressed past stick people so sometimes I wish I had the skills to draw and design like that. But I think I’ll leave it to the talented!

What absolutely beautiful stationary. I have many notepads but I never seem to finish them because I actually hate throwing them away.
