In creating "A Box Of", not only do I want it to be the "go-to" place for beautiful, unique & thoughtful gifts of kindness but also a place that supports & promotes women who are making their dreams their reality. This week, for our Women Following their Dreams series, I've been chatting with the very creative Brenda Stone, Commercial Artist, who specialises in Resin Art.
Brenda is a local Townsvillian, brand new mama and creator of the stunning chopping boards we include in some of our new home gifts too.
When did you discover your artist passion/talent?
I've always loved being artistic and creative. My nana was an artist (realistic landscapes) and my sister was very artistic while at school. I remember watching them both and being encouraged by their passion. This pushed me in my love for art.
What made you specialise in resin art?
Having always loved abstract art, and having experimented with a range of fluid mediums, I found myself drawn to the viscosity of resin; it’s glossy & thick nature. It adds another dimension to 2D paintings, and is so versatile. It is not the easiest medium to work with, but very rewarding!
How is a commercial artist different to another type of artist?
As a custom design artist, I am really intentional about each piece of artwork that I create for its specific space and setting. Commercial art has a purpose and that is at the core of every painting.
When did you decide to make it your main business & tell us more about it?
In August 2016, I held My first solo exhibition at the Drill Hall Studio (privately owned and operated) and that was the boost i needed to go full time in to my art career. Having such a successful exhibition, I became a residence artist at the gallery and that lifted my profile & demand for my artwork. September that same year I had a skiing accident which forced me out of my previous job for 6 weeks, and into my business full-time! I may have been little stubborn/comfortable and probably would still be there if I didn’t have that accident. Thank God!!
What are your top tips for someone starting out in their own business?
Networking was a major help to me. I had always grown up in Townsville but know a lot of business people, so placing myself around other like-minded entrepreneurs was key.
Where do you find your inspiration from?
I see colour in everything! I see patterns in every day life, from natural formations of rocks and waves, to the bright colours of fish and under water life.… Mainly i am inspired by the beach and water - i collect images of aerial views of earth, and beaches. Just Look at the Instagram feed!!!
What’s next for you?
Motherhood and mum life.
What’s your favourite thing about living in North Queensland?
Summer living all year round!
What's your favourite meal?
Sushi - if you consider it a meal!
