How and why did you take up working with the shibori technique?
I saw a gap in the homewares market for products not mass produced. People appreciate the uniqueness of something hand dyed and the story behind the piece. Shibori has no limits, it’s something you can keep being challenged by and keep progressing.
When did you decide it could be a viable business for you?
Haru started as a hobby, I needed something to keep myself busy and I was eager to learn a new skill when we moved to Magnetic Island. So I guess I never decided in the beginning, it was something that just happened. Now though, I see the appreciation people have for our products, feel the encouragement amongst the community I’ve created and I want to create more.
Where do you find your inspiration from for your beautiful designs?
Nature is the inspiration behind all of our ranges, I love how certain colours and shapes make you feel. The colours and patterns all have that organic natural homey feel.
Do you have a favourite from your product range?
I love the simplicity of our grid, it’s just perfect; and navy, navy anything.
How do you manage your personal and business commitments? Any tips?
I treat Haru like I treat my other job, it’s work, you need to be able to switch off or you’re going to be exhausted. I make lists, I set aside so many hours a few afternoons a week and I do my work in that time, I only check emails on the computer and I’m trying so hard not to live on Instagram by planning my posts in advance - that’s a serious struggle!
What advice would you give someone starting out in their own business?
Don’t let the doubters get to you, people are always going to have an opinion of what you’re doing and you’re probably only going to hear the cons. Back yourself.
What's next for you?
I have some big plans for Haru this year and while I’d love to tell the world, you’ll all have to wait a little longer.
As a Magnetic Island local, what's your favourite place on the island?
Florence Bay, it’s a secluded bay down a dodgy dirt road, it’s generally much quieter than the other beaches and it’s just beautiful and peaceful. The water is clear and I could spend all day exploring and relaxing.
What are you currently reading?
Girl on the train, I’m a bit behind the crowd but it’s a great read.
What's your favourite meal?
Crumbed chicken. No doubt in my mind haha.
